Crabby Dick’s Pavilion
For this pavilion, we were approached by long time clients of ours. In fact, we’ve done a ton of work to this building, slowly rehabbing it from a semi-derelict building into a restored downtown historic hotel. We’ve been involved in renovating the restaurant’s kitchen, converting the top level into a gorgeous penthouse, renovating the second level into a hospitality business, providing an elevator, adding a roof deck, adding balconies, and lastly, the focus of this post, a pavilion. The goal was to extend the usefulness of the large exterior decks. The roof would allow for seating in inclement weather while some vinyl panels would allow them to extend the season.
In the end, this pavilion turned out very nice. The contractor paid very close attention to the details and this structure enhances the historic original without taking anything away from it. It also provides a space that allows the owners to recapture their investment in the building. The stage allows for live music acts and the open sides allow the space to still enjoy the views of the water.
The finishes are rustic, mostly wood panels. The ceiling is a natural bead board and while the collar ties are purely decorative, they do a great job of providing some texture to the vaulted space. The fireplace provides a great focal point when there is no music and provides functional heat in the shoulder season. The reclaimed wood panels also provide visual interest even when there is no fire.
The last major design item was the accessibility. Although this is in the back of the building, it is also the main entry for the hospitality business and the access to the elevator. It’s also the kitchen delivery and near to the accessible street parking. The ramp was incredibly important and a bit tricky to work out between code requirements and the available space and existing floor levels.
But with any project like this, the details are important. From detailing the access to the detail the contractor took on the finishes and railings, that is what makes this project special. Care and attention to how it comes together is what elevates this project from basic roof covering to a space to be proud of.
